The August 19th rainstorms which caused so much damage to the University’s facilities not only impacted campus buildings, roads and utilities also damaged certain of the University Libraries’ research and learning collections. On West Campus, the Chemistry Library’s collections were hit hardest. Water leaked within the Chemistry Archives space, combined with an adjacent flooded space to destabilize the space’s environmental conditions, resulting in increases in temperature and relative humidity within the room. As a result, the space has been closed out of concern for library patrons while University Libraries’ and campus facilities staff assess the damage to the collections and the space to ascertain the viability of the collections remaining within the Library’s current location. Updates on progress will be periodically posted as the work progresses. Until then, the collection will remain closed to the campus community.
