Stony Brook University Libraries is pleased to welcome Hojun Son, Ph.D., as our inaugural AI Research Scientist. In this newly established role, Dr. Son will help advance the Libraries’ growing investment in AI research, services and innovation. He brings a strong interdisciplinary background with degrees in information and communication technology, electrical engineering and computer science, and biomedical engineering, along with research experience spanning accessibility, transportation, environmental science, and education. His research interests include multimodal AI for perception, human-computer-interaction and wearable smart systems.
As AI continues to transform higher education and research, Dr. Son will focus on developing and applying AI technologies that enhance information discovery, support digital collections, and strengthen data-informed decision-making across the Libraries. He will also contribute to the creation of AI-powered services that benefit students, faculty, and researchers across the university. His appointment reflects the Libraries’ commitment to building long-term AI research capacity and expanding the role of libraries as leaders in the development of innovative scholarly infrastructure.
