Explore our new research guide for Native American and Indigenous Studies, designed to help students, faculty, and researchers discover resources in the library’s collections and explore Indigenous-led knowledge and resources. The guide brings together Indigenous-authored and community-produced materials, primary sources, and other freely accessible content to support research, teaching, and learning. It connects researchers with materials created by Indigenous communities, with particular attention to the histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples on Long Island.
In fall 2023, Stony Brook University launched its Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) Initiative with Joseph M. Pierce (Cherokee Nation citizen) serving as the founding director. The Initiative emphasizes environmental justice and the cultural and artistic vibrancy of Indigenous communities on Long Island and throughout the New York metro area, while also engaging with regional and global understandings of Indigeneity. Characterized by interdisciplinary scholarship and research, the Initiative prioritizes community engagement and the centering of Indigenous peoples, knowledge, and history.
