The Southampton library is proud to help kick off SBU Libraries Art in Focus series with a lecture on a fascinating topic: the restoration of Jackson Pollock’s 1947 painting Alchemy.
Please join us Tuesday, September 12th at 7 pm on the Southampton campus as Susan Davidson and Carol Stringari of the Guggenheim Museum reveal the painstaking and technologically sophisticated work that went into the restoration. An international team, assembled in Florence in 2014, brought Pollock’s work back to life through a virtuosic display of science and craft.
Alchemy is currently on display at the Guggenheim through September 6th as part of the exhibit Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim. Take a run in to see it and then join us on the 12th for a full discussion! An additional exhibit, Jackson Pollock: Exploring Alchemy, runs through September 17th at the Guggenheim’s Sackler Center for Arts Education and provides an interactive look at the technology of the restoration.
The University Libraries’ Art in Focus Southampton events are co-sponsored by the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center and made possible by support from the John H. Marburger III Fund of Stony Brook University.
The event is free and takes place in the Library Lecture Room of the Stony Brook University Southampton campus library. Full details here.
