The SBU Libraries and our partners are pleased to announce that we’ll be hosting our fourth Human Library event on Wednesday, November 18th from 4:00 – 8:00 PM in the Melville Library Central Reading Room. If you haven’t experienced the Human Library yet, make sure to mark your calendars for this exciting and moving event.
The concept of the Human Library® was developed in Denmark in 2000 by Ronni Abergel, Dany Abergel, and colleagues Asma Mouna and Christoffer Erichsen. It’s an event that presents people as Open Books for honest discussions around stereotypes, prejudices, and lived exeprience. It’s a chance to interact and “unjudge” while hearing from soneone who may have lived a vastly different life than yours. Past Book titles have included: Cancer Survivor, Woman Veteran, Parent of Trans Son, and Amputee.
We are currently recruiting Books and volunteers for the event. Please apply if you feel you would like to share your experiences overcoming a stereotype or prejudice – or if you’d like to volunteer to help at the event. The Human Library is sponsored by University Libraries and the DEIA Team with the Division of Student Affairs, Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Intercultural Initiative (DI3), Office of Military and Veteran Student Services, and Diversity, Intercultural, and Community Engagement (DICE), and the Program in Public Health.
