As part of the University Libraries’ programming in honor of Women’s History Month, we collaborated with the SBU Career Center to present a workshop, “Women, Wages, and Work.” This event featured presentations by Dr. Alfreda James of the Career Center and Jennifer DeVito, Director of Access Services and librarian for Business and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. The workshop was attended by students, faculty, and staff members interested in gaining tools for benchmarking salaries, learning more about companies, and helping themselves and their students to navigate their careers. Dr. James noted that women are often reluctant to negotiate for better salaries and contracts, but that this can be ameliorated by access to high-quality data and industry information. By demonstrating library databases as well as non-library resources, Dr. James and Ms. DeVito provided workshop attendees with important tools to address this problem. The University Libraries look forward to future collaborations with the Career Center and other campus entities!
