On Saturday, June 3, graduates of SBU’s class of 1967 visited Special Collections and University Archives as part of festivities for their 50th class reunion. Alums attended an open house that featured an exhibit of photographs, newspapers, yearbooks, and artifacts from their years on campus. Some of the events they experienced during the early years of SBU include:
1963
- The Muir Report recommended the establishment of “a new medical center, including schools of medicine, dentistry and other health professions, on the State University campus at Stony Brook, Long Island by 1970…”
- In the fall, the Library, Engineering, Biology, and Physical Laboratory (housing Physics and Mathematics) buildings opened.
1964
- The Health and Physical Education Building opened.
1965
- John Toll became the second president of the university.
- Students chose “Patriots” as the new name for SBU’s athletic teams.
1966
- C.N. Yang, Nobel Laureate, joined the faculty as “Einstein Professor of Physics,” one of only ten Einstein Professors in New York State.
- SBU was selected to be the site of the New York State Marine Sciences Research Center.
- The first Vice President of the Health Sciences, Edmund Pellegrino, was charged with establishing a medical center that included a tertiary care hospital.
- Governor Rockefeller attended ground breaking ceremonies for Graduate Engineering, the Computing Center, and the Earth and Space Sciences building.
