Give a Book Take a Book – SS Melville Lives On!

The SS Melville boat will serve as a new library outreach vessel for supplying books for patrons to give and take.

Last April Stony Brook University Libraries entered our first Roth Regatta race, taking 2nd place in the speedster category.  We were all very proud of the effort and support put forth by all involved.  The boat, which is still in excellent condition, will live on in a new form, a vessel to hold donated books that students may borrow at their leisure, with the condition that they will either leave a book in exchange or return the one that they have taken after reading.  We anticipate that the project will be a great success!

The award winning boat will be placed in the Main Library’s Central Reading Room (CRR), on the 1st floor.  The trophy will also be displayed, with a brief description of the boat’s history and meaning.  The Library is currently accepting book donations, preferably popular fiction books as opposed to textbooks or other non-fiction material.  Books can be dropped off at the offices of Kathleen Maxheimer (Reference Office by horseshoe), Kristen Cinar (in CRR), or at the Main Circulation Desk on the 3rd floor.  If you have questions about this program, please call Kathleen Maxheimer, 631-632-7135.

We hope everyone will take advantage of this new and exciting addition to the Stony Brook University Libraries’ patron services.
