On Tuesday, April 2, a standing-room only audience filled the Poetry Center in the Humanities Building for a lively discussion between revered poets and Stony Brook University faculty Rowan Ricardo Phillips and Cornelius Eady. Through highly engaging readings and commentaries, Dr. Phillips and Dr. Eady examined Walt Whitman’s influence on the poetry and culture of the Americas, and addressed Whitman’s impact nationally, globally, and on their own poetry. In attendance was Long Island scholar and actor Darrel Blaine Ford, who made a striking appearance as Walt himself. A selection of rare poetry works from SBU Libraries’ Special Collections was on display at the program. The event, which kicked off National Poetry Month, was sponsored and supported by a FAHSS grant award, Run Run Shaw Fund, University Libraries, Humanities Institute, and the Department of English.
