The HistoryMakers is For Everybody: The Power of the World’s Largest African American Oral History Digital Archive

Event Description

Come and experience the Power of the World’s Largest African American Oral History Digital Archive—The HistoryMakers—which is available to all members of the Stony Brook community, thanks to the generosity of the library and the president’s office of Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Zebulon Miletsky, Chair of Africana Studies and a Master Teaching Fellow with The HistoryMakers, will walk participants through an interactive and fascinating look at what the archive has to offer—what it can do—and how it ca be used in disciplines other than History and Africana Studies. There are Black writers, poets, authors, scientists, leaders, politicians, mathematicians, engineers—and so many more in the archive. An English professor can have their students research and listen to the voices of the actual authors they’ve assigned. The same can be done in Computer Science, Music, space exploration, social work, public policy, journalism—and virtually any topic taught at Stony Brook. Find out how to add some diversity to your curriculum by helping students explore more about the African American experience in all fields of human endeavor. Swag is also available. Participate in an activity and win a free HistoryMakers T shirt.

This event will be held in the Center for Scholarly Communication (Melville Library, C-2601) and via Zoom.
