The rapid development of the Digital Humanities and their involvement in the Humanities research field has brought into discussion a vivid debate about how humanist scholars should meet these new digital challenges and how to incorporate them to their research. In order to contribute to this interesting dialogue, the Department of Hispanic Languages and Literature at Stony Brook University, together with the Stony Brook University Libraries, organizes the workshop Humanities and the Digital.
This workshop will address the relationships between Humanities and digital computing, delving into the intersection of humanism and digital as a subject of both textual social and historical interest and contemporary practical concern. We will focus on what it means to be a scholar in the field of Humanities in our digital world by engaging in the ongoing theoretical discussions about the possibilities of this field, but also by showing actual project samples and finding out what it means to implement this type of research in the digital environment.
Graduate students will leave this workshop having gained a personally significant understanding of current debates in the field as well as having learned the basic features of some of the most used digital humanities tools (mapping and exhibits with the program Scalar) a digital project that furthers your own research.”
