The annual Antonija Prelec Memorial Lecture took place in the Wang Center Theater on March 27th, 2025. This event celebrates the life and accomplishments of the founding Director of the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Library, Antonija Prelec. The lecture is open to all, and typically features a high-profile speaker whose expertise is relevant to health sciences librarianship.
This year’s speaker was Dr. Zeynep Tufekci, New York Times columnist and Henry G. Bryant Professor of Sociology at Princeton University. Her lecture, “Everyone is Having the Wrong Nightmares: AI’s True Threats,” highlighted some of the potential issues that may arise from utilizing artificial intelligence, primarily the reliance on large language models to replace essential cognitive processes. She also cautioned against viewing AI as a replacement for human intelligence, whereas it is its own entity unto itself. The lecture was engaging and well-received, with numerous audience members asking thought-provoking questions afterwards.
The Prelec Committee is currently planning next year’s lecture, and is in the process of identifying another high impact speaker.
