Diamonds and cloth-work were among the scholarly topics discussed by SBU professors Adrienne Munich and Mary Jo Bona, at the first program of the fall 2016 University Libraries Presents: Writers Series. A standing room-only audience of university and community guests gathered to learn about their recent research endeavors.
In Women Writing Cloth: Migratory Fictions in the American Imaginary, Dr. Bona, Professor and Chair of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies, presented her research on the relationship between literary representations of cloth-work and migration, demonstrating how American authors innovate on pre-modern stories of weaving women in order to explore the intricate connections between handwork, resourcefulness, and mobility.
Dr. Munich, Professor of English, discussed her research on “Scramblers for Diamonds at the “Big Hole” in Kimberley, South Africa,” and the archives that uncovered images and words of common men who became part of the imperially-named “the scramble for Africa.”
Two more events in the Writers Series will be held this semester.
