Libraries Sponsor AI in Education at SUNY Symposium

This week, SBU Libraries was excited to be part of the third annual SUNY AI Symposium at Stony Brook University’s Charles B. Wang Center. Janet Clarke, Associate Dean of Research and Learning, and Nick Johnson, Director of AI, were part of the Symposium Planning Committee and helped to program a panel as part of Wednesday’s schedule: “AI in Education: Innovations in the Classroom.”

The panel was introduced by Clarke and moderated by Rose Tirotta-Esposito, Assistant Provost of Educational Transformation and Director of CELT. It featured four speakers from across the educational spectrum:

Brenden Cusack, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, Huntington UFSD
Christine Fena, Undergraduate Success Librarian, SBU
Keith Landa, Director of the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Center & Associate Librarian, SUNY Purchase

The speakers addressed excitement and concerns surrounding AI impacts to learning in a variety of environments, including K-12 classrooms, engineering coursework, impacts to college and career readiness, and the role of libraries in advancing AI literacy. They shared both general reactions as well as specific classroom policies, practices, and experiences. The panel was part of an engaging 2-day program that featured speakers from throughout SUNY and beyond, as well as art exhibits, poster presentations, and industry displays.
