Did you know that Stony Brook University has an incredible concert history? Performing five times on campus, the Allman Brothers Band was known as Stony Brook’s house band in 1970; they even rehearsed in Tabler Quad. Ticket price for students: $1! Pink Floyd, The Doors, Janis Joplin, The Who, Blue Oyster Cult, and Jimi Hendrix all took the stage in the original gym during the 1960s and 1970s.
One of the Allman Brothers’ last performances, with founding member Duane Allman, took place at Stony Brook on September 19, 1971. Five weeks later, he tragically died in a motorcycle accident. That concert, regarded as one of the band’s best ever recordings, has been uploaded to YouTube.
