Mythopoeia: Understanding Myth in its Making

Date: 04/25/2018

Time: 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Description

A colloquium held in conjunction with Luca Zanchi’s CLL 215 course, intended for students, faculty, and staff. There will be three speakers:

Luca Zanchi
Classical Mythology Instructor for the Spring Semester 2018 at Stony Brook University, and PhD. candidate in Cultural Studies, Zanchi will share with the Stony Brook community some of the reflections on the pedagogy of myth that his current CLL 215 seminar explores. He’ll demonstrate how a mythology class can be an opportunity to learn how to understand the archetypes and cultural patterns that recur in the arts and in literature, as well as in our lives, shaping the way we construct our personal narratives. There will also be a sampling of his students’ works.

Sophie Raynard-Leroy
Associate Professor of French and Comparative Literature at Stony Brook, Raynard-Leroy writes and teaches classes on European classic fairy tales and their modern and post-modern adaptations. In this co-presentation she will explain how she created a fairy-tale workshop, within the context of a FRN advanced course, using the universally-spread story of Cinderella as a successful case study in a literature and creative writing seminar.

Angela Infante
An international collage artist, special guest in Zanchi’s CLL 215 Classical Mythology seminar, Infante will introduce the audience to the theory behind the Collage Workshop she set up in Zanchi’s mythology class as a plastic artistic component of the course. She will also present actual students’ collages produced under her supervision in that class.
