Stony Brook University Libraries Celebrating 10th Year Anniversary of Global Library Initiatives

This year, we are celebrating the 10th year anniversary of the Global Library Initiatives at Stony Brook University.

The mission is to strengthen international ties among libraries and librarians worldwide for the promotion of international education, understanding, and peace. We strive to promote student and faculty achievement and preparation for global competitiveness in collaboration with the Office of Global Affairs and Stony Brook University academic and clinical departments and centers at home and abroad.

Since its inception in September 2014, the Office of Global Library Initiatives has worked closely with academic and clinical departments and the Office of Global Affairs to identify international initiatives, programs, and activities in order to focus the Library’s efforts to the areas that are most critical to Stony Brook University’s success.

We have initiated and developed relationships with research libraries that support the global mission of Stony Brook University and initiated sustaining international collaborations. We have expanded information exchange and visiting scholar programs. So far, Stony Brook University Libraries have hosted 16 visiting scholars from China, Japan, Jamaica, the United States, and other countries around the world. We have provided reference, research services, and library instruction to Stony Brook’s global campuses, such as SUNY Korea, Stony Brook Institute at Anhui University in China, and research facilities, e.g., Centre ValBio on the edge of Ranomafana National Park in Madagascar.

Our most recent visiting scholar, Dr. Yimin Zhao, is a research librarian at Yunnan Normal University in China. His research interests include information organization, information services, and artificial intelligence. He has been the principal investigator of various projects, including the National Social Science Fund Project and the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation Project. He has published over 90 papers in academic journals and conferences, and he has authored or co-authored nearly 20 books.

On March 21st, Dr. Zhao presented on The Hallucination of the Large Language Model: A New “Platonic Cave”? at Stony Brook University Libraries.
