Description

Jonathan O. Cain examines how data skill sets can help to prepare students to meet the challenges of our current knowledge and technology-based economy, with a concentration on how data services in libraries can mitigate the well-reported lack of diversity in data science and data-savvy careers. Cain will illustrate the linking effects of limited access for women and minoritized groups to disciplines that traditionally produce data experts; a homogenous data expert pool; and the ways that data is used to make impactful decisions in health, public administration, economics, education, and government.

Cain will present how the University of Oregon Libraries has used data services to help fulfill the University’s objectives of preparing students who are equipped to meet the needs of a data-intensive world, professionalize diverse data experts, and offer opportunities to students from non-traditionally represented disciplines and communities.
