As Moira Chas, professor of mathematics at SBU, awaited the birth of her daughter, she occupied her mind with crocheting. After exhausting the options of shirts and dresses, she turned to creating mathematical objects in yarn. In this talk, she will use her creations to discuss and demonstrate a number of questions that have occupied the minds of mathematicians since the mid-1880s. She’ll explain how making the objects led to a deeper understanding of the ideas behind them and how she eventually switched from crocheting to looping wire in her pursuit of that understanding.
