Achieving the Dream (ATD) is not a tech tool, but it’s using technology to make college more accessible. ATD awarded grants to 38 community colleges across 13 states to transition their entire degree programs from traditional textbooks to open educational resources (OER). This will save their students an estimated $1,300 per year on the cost of textbook. OER initiatives already in place at other institutions have helped improve retention and increase student satisfaction.
This is a big win for OER and a great opportunity for the participating institutions to show that building programs with open resources is an achievable goal and one that’s good for students and teaching. Five SUNY community colleges have been awarded ATD grants so we’ll have the opportunity to keep tabs on the development of this exciting program.
