Stony Brook’s Alumni Association will celebrate its 50th anniversary on August 28. For the last 50 years, the association has supported its extensive network of Stony Brook alumni around the world – now 160,000 alumni strong.

Established on August 28, 1965, the first president was Phil Mighdoll; board members were Patricia Glenn, Stephen Auerbach, Marilyn Vilagi, Renee Warshofsky, Edward Wetter and Phyllis Wilensky. With the generosity of William and Jane Knapp (class of 1978 and a former board president), the alumni office moved in 1996 to the heart of campus, on the first floor of the Frank Melville, Jr. Memorial Library, overlooking the “Staller Steps.” A dedication ceremony was held on September 12, 1996, naming it the William and Jane Knapp Alumni Center.

The Alumni Association has compiled a timeline documenting highlights and important events in its history, utilizing collections and primary source materials from the University Archives. Information about Special Collections and University Archives is available on the website for the department.  -Kristen J.
