The Stony Brook University Libraries provides course reserves in support of the instructional requirements of specific classes at Stony Brook University. This material has a shorter circulation period (2 hours – 7 days) and may be restricted to use in the Library to accommodate use by all students in the class. Electronic reserves are scanned copies of portions of items from our collection (must be less than 10% of the entire work). Instructors must submit a Reserve Request form to request material be put on reserve.
Reserve material is on reserve for one (1) semester. Reserve locations are in the following library locations: North Reading Room, Math/Physics/Astronomy, Music, Health Sciences Library, and Southampton.
Please submit your Reserves requests by the following dates:
Fall Semester – July 30
Winter Semester – November 30
Spring Semester – November 30
Summer Semester – April 30
*Requests placed within two weeks of the start of the semester may not be ready for the first week of classes.*

Ordering New Materials – Reserves
Instructors may submit requests to purchase material for reserves using the online purchase request form. Please also fill out the Reserves request form to ensure the items are placed on reserve once they have been purchased.
Instructors are also encouraged to draw course materials from the Libraries’ physical or online collections or from the many open education resources (OER) now readily available. Discover OERs on the SBU Libraries’ Open Education Guide and the Open SUNY Textbooks and OER Services site.
Reserves Loan Policy
Reserve items from the SBU Libraries collection may be taken out from the library for the duration of the loan period. The borrower is responsible for returning reserve items on time or paying the resulting overdue fine.
Some personal copies on reserve may not be taken out of the library location from which they were borrowed.
Reserve items must be returned to the library location from which they were checked out.
Fines for reserve materials can be found here: Fines & Fees.
