Reading Libraries: Past Practice and Current Implications by Kate Kasten
The relationship between reading and libraries is so well-established as to form a cultural cliché.  So normative is it in many cases that there is a tendency to forget the important ways in which this dynamic has evolved over centuries.  Indeed, the ways in which reading practices and libraries continue to inform one another offer important insights into the library’s role in supporting and shaping reading practices from the perspectives of both collections and services.  Points of contact include the public and private nature of reading, digital formats and reading practices, close vs. distant reading, the cost of textbooks, and considerations of language and space.  This talk is part of an ongoing research project concerning cultures and practices of reading in the humanities and lettered social sciences.
