The Art of the Book: Non-adhesive Bindings – A presentation on historical non-adhesive binding styles and their modern interpretations in the book arts. Coptic binding from North Africa, stab binding from Asia, and long stitch binding from Europe will be discussed from a historical and structural perspective. Historical representations and modern style books will be available for handling during the presentation. Presented by: Arielle Hessler; Preservation Technician/Bookbinder
Writing Memory: The French Revolution and the ‘Archives Nationales’ in Contemporary Texts- This paper explores seventeenth- and eighteenth- century French attitudes toward the archive in concept and in practice, as well as toward the broader notions of information and access. Using text mining techniques, it is possible to explore contemporary usages of the French word archives in literary and historical texts in order to better understand the cultural implications of this term as its meaning developed and evolved.
