Description
Library Multimedia Specialist Chris Sauerwald gives a guided tour of the recently upgraded Digital Projects and Exhibits online platform. This informal talk focuses on the new cutting edge free and open source Mirador 3.0 image viewer now integrated into all of SBU Libraries’ digital collections presented in Omeka S 3.0.
This web browser based viewer introduces exciting new possibilities for teaching and research, leveraging not only items from our own digital collections but also resources from other cultural institutions across the globe. We will discuss current features and a roadmap to future new capabilities.
Open to anyone at SBU; of particular interest to those working in libraries, archives, manuscripts, museum studies, art, history, cartography/geology or anyone whose research or teaching involves digital imagery e.g. books, maps, scrolls, newspapers, photos, etc.
Background:
Digitizing cultural heritage items for preservation and public access also allows new opportunities for online exhibition, research, and pedagogy. Next-generation technology provides the ability for scholars not only to access and view digitized items but also to contextualize and interpret them within a larger body of available digital multimedia materials.
At the forefront of this effort is the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) which seeks to release image-based resources from the silos of institutional archives, increasing the availability and transmission of cultural knowledge. IIIF is a standard of shared API specifications for interoperable functionality in digital asset repositories using JSON-LD, linked data, and standard W3C web protocols.
