Might the voices of women veterans cast a new light on the realities, ravages and aftermath of war? At a time when we have an increasing number of women in active combat, what would it mean to see war through their eyes? What might their writings and reflections have to teach us? In conjunction with Stony Brook University’s Humanities Institute and the Herstory Writers Workshop of Long Island, we invite female veterans interested in narrating their wartime experiences to join a collaborative writing project using the Herstory methodology. Interested participants will be female veterans who are willing to reflect on their wartime experiences in a supportive group setting. Over the course of this 9-week program, participants will be led by Laurel Janssen Breen, PhD, RN, retired Associate Professor and Assistant Chair of the Department of Nursing at St. Joseph’s College. The aim of the workshop will be for its female participants to translate their stories of their service in the military into Herstory’s “Page One Moments” and memoir essays.

Registration

This workshop will be offered free of charge to any female veteran in the Long Island/ Greater New York City area and/or Stony Brook University community. No prior writing experience necessary
