Students Enjoy Fall Color on a Campus Nature Walk

On October 23, 2025, students took a break from classes to enjoy the beautiful weather and changing leaf colors. We walked through Ashley Schiff Preserve enjoying the sounds, smells, and sights of the forest, along with the help of some binoculars from the Library of Things’ Nature Packs.

Species spotted included white-breasted nuthatch, red-bellied woodpecker, blue jay, as well as a white-tailed deer and squirrels, chipmunks, crickets, and a sleepy bumblebee. The maples, oaks, beeches, and sassafras were all in different color stages and we saw plenty of reds, oranges and yellows as we walked through the woods. Students also learned about the tick’s life cycle from a brief “tick talk,” and had a tutorial on how to use iNaturalist to share observations of the natural world with global research communities.
