Introducing Article Galaxy Scholar: On-Demand Access to Scholarly Articles

We’re excited to announce a long-awaited enhancement to research access at Stony Brook University Libraries! Through a new partnership with Research Solutions/Reprints Desk, we are now offering on-demand access to scholarly literature on a per-article basis—a major step forward in supporting the research and teaching needs of our academic community.

What’s New?
Beginning 4/18/25, the Libraries will pilot a subscription to Article Galaxy Scholar (AGS), a platform designed to supplement our existing library collection. AGS enables alternative, article fulfillment for high-demand journals we do not currently subscribe to, including titles from the Elsevier, Oxford University Press, Springer Nature and more.

How It Works
Users will begin seeing a special “Request a PDF” link on article records in our catalog that are:

  • Not available through existing library subscriptions

  • Available as open access

  • Available via a pay-per-view alternative

Open access articles will be delivered through direct links, while purchased articles will be sent directly to your email inbox—typically within an hour of your request. It’s a reliable solution for time-sensitive projects, urgent teaching needs, or just getting around frustrating paywalls.

Who Can Use It?
During the pilot, access to Article Galaxy Scholar will vary depending on user profiles:

  • Faculty and graduate students: Enjoy automatic access to eligible articles. Just click the link, and the PDF will be delivered to your inbox.

  • Research assistants or special use cases: Faculty can reach out to LibraryERMS@stonybrook.edu for assistance setting up accounts.

To ensure your profile is correctly recognized, please sign in with your NetID when searching the library catalog.

Why This Matters
Article Galaxy Scholar helps us manage library costs while expanding immediate access to essential content. With 24/7 coverage and intelligent configuration, AGS reduces delays and access gaps—offering a more seamless research experience for our users.

This pilot reflects our ongoing commitment to enhancing access, supporting academic success, and meeting our community’s evolving needs.

Stay tuned for more updates as we roll out this exciting new service—and start exploring the expanded access through Article Galaxy Scholar this spring!
