Serving in SBU Libraries Southampton campus location means enjoying the yearly Windmill Lighting and Winter Wonderland Reception spectacle. On December 5th revelers filled the SBU library at Stony Brook Southampton, serenaded with music provided by Stony Brook University orchestra members, a photo booth sponsored by the Alumni Association, a crafts table for children, and face painting.
The SBU Southampton library, a celebrity in its own right, is not just a library. It also houses the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Study Center and is the first Long Island LEED Gold Certified library. This year, it welcomed esteemed guests such as State Senator Anthony Palumbo, State Assemblyman-Elect Tommy John Schiavone, Suffolk County Legislator Ann Welker, and Southampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore for SUNY Stony Brook’s Interim President Richard McCormick’s address, along with Wolfie and his crew.
Following welcoming remarks by Wendy Pearson, the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Executive Director of Stony Brook Southampton, McCormick’s address sincerely appreciated Pearson’s role in revitalizing the campus. He also highlighted her efforts to strengthen community ties and reinvest in Southampton campus infrastructure. He referred to developments such as the expanded Southampton Hospital, workforce housing, and academic/community programs.
Turning to the lighting, McCormick eloquently addresses the historical significance of the windmill, originally constructed in 1713 and relocated to Shinnecock Hills in 1888 by Janet Hoyt, as a cherished landmark and icon of the Shinnecock Hills area. In 1957, playwright Tennessee Williams famously used it to write The Day on Which a Man Dies, loosely based on Jackson Pollock. This rich history is a testament to the enduring legacy of our community.
