Looking back and looking forward: the Stony Brook Union is currently closed for renovation, and 50 years ago today this photograph was taken as it was being built (February 1967). Designed by famed architect Jan Pokorny, it was constructed of concrete and dark glazed brick because steel was not readily available during the Vietnam War and during the construction of the World Trade Center, according to architectural historian Caroline Zaleski.
