Stony Brook liaison librarians gathered at the Southampton campus on Monday, July 17th for a day of brainstorming, discussion, and reflective thinking on the ways in which we can better inspire and facilitate learning on the Stony Brook campus. Dean Constantia Constantinou began the retreat with enthusiastic opening remarks [watch her opening remarks here] and introduced the first guest speaker, Anne Kenney, University Librarian at Cornell University Library. Kenney’s talk, Liaison Futures: View from a University Librarian, focused on the future of academic librarianship and the ways in which the liaison model benefits librarians as subject specialists.
Next, Kornelia Tancheva, Associate University Librarian at Cornell University Library, led a talk and workshop on Liaison Librarians, Liaison Programs, and Research Universities. The workshop challenged the liaison librarians to explore the needs and wants of specific user groups on campus and brainstorm ways in which the library can better serve that population.
After lunch, a walking tour of the Southampton campus, and a group photo, everyone reconvened for break-out brainstorming sessions on teaching in the flexible classroom, pop-up libraries, digital badges, and chat reference.
Later the group moved back into the air-conditioned lecture hall for a series of lightning talks on instructional tech tools. Topics included Formative, Poll Everywhere, ORCID, institutional apps, and the HSC iPad program.
The afternoon concluded with three short sessions on interesting topics like implicit bias in the workplace, access services, and effectively using the University’s academic commons.
