We’ve officially launched the Library AI Steering Committee! This group is one of the first of its kind in academic research libraries and will help shape how the library thoughtfully and responsibly integrates artificial intelligence into our services, operations, and scholarly mission. By supporting the integration, development, and responsible use of AI technologies in discovery, research, and teaching, the committee marks an exciting new era of innovation at SBU Libraries.
The committee will serve as a forum for evaluating opportunities and risks, recommending policies and best practices, and ensuring that AI initiatives align with the Libraries’ values of equity, accessibility, intellectual freedom, and responsible innovation. The AI Steering Committee will provide recommendations to Library leadership to support evidence-based decision-making regarding the adoption, implementation and governance of AI-related initiatives at the Library.
Chaired by Nicholas Johnson, Director of Artificial Intelligence at SBU Libraries and composed of faculty and staff from across library departments, the committee will meet regularly to identify opportunities, address challenges, and share progress with the library community. Approved by Dean Karim Boughida and library leadership, this initiative reflects the Libraries’ forward-looking vision and commitment to responsible innovation.
