In the popular Art In Focus Lecture Series tradition, Summer 2023 brought a new lecture series, The Art of Relationships, sponsored jointly by the Stony Brook University Libraries and the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center. The Art of Relationships lecture series complemented the Pollock-Krasner House’s summer exhibition, “Creative Exchanges: Artists in Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner’s Address Book,” which closed on July 30. Below are the last four lectures in the summer series, including one by Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center Director, Helen A. Harrison.
The Art of Relationships. Jeanne Reynal: Mosaic is Light, with Jennifer Samet.
An early purchaser of Pollock’s work, Jeanne Reynal was described by Elaine de Kooning as “a wonderful artist who was much better known as a collector.” Jennifer discusses Reynal’s innovative expressionistic approach to mosaic art. Jennifer Samet is the Director of Eric Firestone Gallery.
The Art of Relationships. Betty Parsons in the Company of Friends, with Anne Cohen DePietro.
Betty Parsons was an artist who was better known in another guise, that of a pioneering gallerist who represented Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and other abstract expressionists early in their careers. Anne examines Parsons’ dual roles in the New York avant-garde. Anne Cohen DePietro is an art historian and curator.
The Art of Relationships. Bonac Bohemia: Artists of the Springs, with Helen A. Harrison.
Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner were the first artists to settle in the rural East Hampton hamlet, and they attracted their friends, many of whom also established homes and studios in The Springs. Helen traces the art colony’s evolution. Helen A. Harrison is the Director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center.
The Art of Relationships. Benton, Pollock, and the Secrets of El Greco, with Henry Adams.
The author of books on Thomas Hart Benton and his student, Jackson Pollock, Henry explains Benton’s formative influence through the lens of their shared admiration for the work of the mannerist painter Domḗnikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco. Henry Adams is a Professor of Art History at Case Western Reserve University.
