Description
Works by Harold Lehman (1913-2006) are currently on view in “Harold Lehman: The Nineteen Thirties,” at the Pollock-Krasner House. In 1943, he completed the mural Locomotive Repair Operation for the Renovo Post Office in north-central Pennsylvania–one of 88 murals commissioned for post offices throughout the state–depicting Renovo’s important role in the railroading industry. Learn about the mural’s development from initial sketches to finished artwork and see how Lehman succeeded in including several controversial details which escaped the notice of government officials.
David Lembeck is a graphic designer and independent scholar who has been researching Pennsylvania’s post office murals for over 25 years. In 2007 he co-curated the exhibition “A Common Canvas: Pennsylvania’s Post Office Murals of the New Deal” at the State Museum of Pennsylvania. He is currently working on a book about the murals.
The Art in Focus series is co-sponsored by Stony Brook Southampton Library and the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center. The talks are free, but registration is required. Made possible by support from the John H. Marburger III Fund of Stony Brook University.
