Description
Abstract
How does accessing social spaces relate to the social construction of gender and sexual identities? How can site-specific signage taken as signifier offer a view into societal ethics and cultural ethos? What are the institutional investments in policing bodies and enforcing cis-heteronormativity? And what can queering space (and spatiality) offer in terms of the future design of ‘something else’? This talk takes as its point of departure debates around public gendered restrooms to consider the biopolitics of space, the designs of power and knowledge, and the generative connections between spatial equity and social justice.
Speaker
Stephanie Bonvissuto is a PhD candidate in the Dept. of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Stony Brook University in NY. She is also a graduate instructor, teaching a variety of courses in traditional and virtual settings. Her fields of study include trans/queer studies and feminist theory, as well as the sociology of gender, sexuality, and space, all of which informs her dissertation research on gender and sexual nonconforming identity field formations in context of spatial equity. Her single and co-authored work can be found in Sociological Focus, Creativity Studies, as well as the upcoming titles Male Femininities (NYU Press 2022) and Mapping LGBTQ Spaces and Places – A Changing World (Spring Nature 2022). Outside of the classroom, she has served as a sitting board member and volunteer peer group facilitator at a U.S.-based LGBTQ community center (2005-2009) and as the student coordinator of the Queer Student Center at the University of Massachusetts Boston (2010-1013).
