The Barbara Ferris Van Liew Collection comprises 2.5 linear ft. of Van Liew’s research notes, files, books, and a set of the newsletter Preservation Notes, which she founded. Van Liew was a noted author, architectural historian, preservationist, and Historian of Head of the Harbor, New York.

Biographical Note
Barbara Ferris Van Liew (1910/1911–2005) was an American architectural historian and historic preservation advocate. A founding member of the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities (now Preservation Long Island), she contributed to the development of preservation policy and the documentation of historic resources on Long Island. She authored reports supporting preservation legislation and directed surveys that documented approximately 6,500 historic buildings in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Her work provided the basis for numerous landmark designations and historic district nominations. Van Liew also served as historian for the Village of Head of the Harbor and published educational materials on the preservation of historic buildings.
