The Institute for Colonial Studies was created in 1966. Its focus was to collect, microfilm, and index public and private materials relating to all European colonies in the New World from the 16th through 18th centuries, to make these records available for interdisciplinary research, and to provide a central location for comparative study of European colonies in the New World.
The collection includes more than 798 reels of content including private, town, and county records, and documents produced along the eastern searboard, with an emphasis on New England and Middle Atlantic colonies, in particular Long Island, New York and New York City. There are deeds, muster lists, diaries, tax lists, wills, letter collections, accounts of events, court and other public records, and dissertations concerned with these periods of time.
