MLA 2018 Comes to SBU Libraries!

On February 8th, Stony Brook University faculty members gathered at the library to share their scholarship as part of an interdisciplinary discussion of work in the fields of modern languages, literatures, and cultural studies.  Dr. Kristina Lucenko (Assistant Professor in the Program in Writing & Rhetoric), Dr. Shyam Sharma (Assistant Professor in the Program in Writing & Rhetoric), Dr. Lisa Diedrich (Professor of Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies), and Dr. Mary Jo Bona (Professor of Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies) gave lightning talks based on presentations created for the 2018 Modern Language Association (MLA) Convention in New York City.

Dr. Lucenko and Dr. Sharma, who were prevented from giving their intended talk at MLA by the extreme weather, shared their work on international student engagement and success.

Dr. Diedrich, whose conference presentation had also been preempted by the snow, discussed her work in the field of critical medical studies as part of a newly formed group within MLA.  Her talk situated a complex, interdisciplinary field within a broader scholarly context, while also providing a cogent treatment of the diverse ways in which it is named by scholars working in this and adjacent fields.

Dr. Bona participated in a panel at MLA devoted to a re-visiting of Judith Fetterley’s The Resisting Reader, forty years after its initial publication.  Her presentation described the scholarly progeny of this book while positing it as a sort of paradigmatic shift in feminist readings of nineteenth-century literature.

The University Libraries thanks our colleagues for sharing their work as part of the MLA Discussion Forum.  Looking forward to next year’s event!
