Drug Advertising in JAMA During the 1970s Presented By Gregg Stevens
Drug advertising in medical journals reflects both medical practice and social conditions. Ads from print issues of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) were examined, from the years 1971 to 1979, in order to determine trends in medical practice and to study the imagery as a reflection of society in the 1970s. This presentation will discuss some of these historical differences and why this advertising matters to medical and social historians.
Exploring the Art of Picture Book Writing By Dana Haugh
In this presentation, Dana will recount her participation in last year’s Southampton Writers Conference. Since 1976, writers have gathered every July in Southampton to take workshops with some of the country’s most distinguished authors of fiction, poetry and nonfiction. Writers participate in genre-specific writing workshops, and attend lectures, readings, performances and panel discussions. Dana participated in the picture book writing workshop as part of her Children’s Literature Fellowship. She and five other picture book authors worked closely with award-winning picture book author Emma Walton Hamilton to workshop and develop their manuscripts. This presentation will include a reading from one of Dana’s favorite books in order to demonstrate some of the core aspects of successful picture book writing.
