3D Printing Presentation at ACRL New England Chapter Annual Conference

On May 4, 2018 Stony Brook Health Sciences Librarian Laurel Scheinfeld attended the annual conference of the Association for College and Research Libraries, New England Chapter (ACRL/NE) where she gave a presentation with Joan Wagner and Blanche Leeman from Touro College.  The presentation focused on 3D Printing in Health Sciences Libraries, specifically a pilot project that involves teaching occupational therapy (OT) students to design and create assistive devices for their patients using computer aided design (CAD) software and 3D printers.  In this project, librarians are embedded in a 2-credit OT course in which they provide instruction to students in 3D design and operation of the printer, as well as the organization and documentation of the inter-professional communication between OT students, engineering students, and OT faculty.  This is an example of an innovative way librarians can support the health science curriculum.
