19th Annual Stony Brook Film Festival

July 17 marks the start of the annual  Stony Brook Film Festival at the Staller Center for the Arts, where moviegoers will enjoy ten days of terrific short and feature length independent films. Opening night kicks off with the U.S. premiere of feature film Back on Track  (Sein letzes Rennen), about an aging Olympic medalist retraining for a marathon. Also on the slate  for opening night is Across Grace Alley, a short film by Long Island native Ralph Macchio.

If the film festival only whets your appetite for more movies, be sure to visit the Melville Library, another great resource for film buffs. The Library offers patrons more than 8000 film titles on DVD and video, including action flicks, animated films, documentaries, horror films, and film noir. For those with a scholarly interest in film, the Library’s Research and Subject Guide to Cinema Studies provides links to books, journals, topical websites, and reviews.

Stony Brook University students, faculty, and staff are able to borrow up to 3 DVDs or videos at a time for one week and may renew them online as well. The DVD/Video Collection is located in the Main Stacks, on the third floor of the Melville Library building.  All films can be found using SBU Find or the catalog  (STARS), by searching for the title, topic, director, actor, format and other qualifiers.
